The Top 5 Essential Practices Every DBA Should Follow

As a database administrator, ensuring optimal database performance and reliability is crucial. Here are the top five practices that I believe every DBA should incorporate into their routine:

Knowledge Sharing:
Sharing your expertise not only benefits others but also enhances your own understanding. Whether through blog posts, presentations, or mentoring junior DBAs, sharing knowledge can spark new insights and reinforce your skills.

Thorough Documentation:
Relying solely on memory is risky. Meticulously document every step of your processes, configurations, and troubleshooting methods. Comprehensive documentation is invaluable for recalling complex procedures and facilitating seamless handovers to colleagues.

Storing Scripts in the Cloud:
Ensure your scripts are stored in the cloud using platforms like
OneDrive or GitHub. Organized cloud storage allows you to access your essential tools from anywhere, anytime, ensuring you're always prepared. It is also convenient to share with others.

Building a Strong DBA Community:
Supporting your peers is vital. Remember the relief when someone assists you during a production issue? Foster a robust network by participating in user groups, engaging in forums, and connecting with other professionals. A solid community can be a lifesaver.

Implementing a Robust Health Check and Alert System:
Regularly monitor your database health. Whether using OEM reports, Excel/PowerBI dashboards, or even HTML reports, choose a comprehensive system that tracks key metrics such as database availability, performance statistics, backup statuses, and critical errors. Consistent monitoring at the beginning and end of each day can prevent issues before they escalate.
